{"id":12829,"date":"2019-03-21T18:43:30","date_gmt":"2019-03-22T00:43:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/?p=12829"},"modified":"2019-03-21T18:43:30","modified_gmt":"2019-03-22T00:43:30","slug":"from-the-classroom-to-the-capitol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/2019\/03\/21\/from-the-classroom-to-the-capitol\/","title":{"rendered":"From the classroom to the capitol"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Thursday, March 7, alumna Kaycie Alexander testified in Austin, Texas, on two bills to be passed for the state of Texas. These bills regard the resources available to incarcerated women and the rights women have while incarcerated.<\/p>\n<p>Alexander graduated in December 2018 with a B.S. in Public Administration. While she attended Harding, she had a passion for the criminal justice system, and within the criminal justice system, Alexander had a passion for the rights of incarcerated women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI initially got interested in [criminal justice reform] through classes at school, specifically a class called public policy,\u201d Alexander said. \u201cWe did a criminal justice unit and then I really liked it. After that, I started volunteering at the White County Jail &#8230;directly with incarcerated women. That gave me the passion and drive of, \u2018I want to do something to make this better for them and make it easier for these women to see their children and rehabilitate.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alexander focused her capstone project,\u201cWomen Behind Bars: Recidivism Among Incarcerated Women,\u201d on the subject of criminal justice reform for women. After graduation, she\u00a0was hired by the Texas Public Policy Foundation\u2019s Right on Crime department, located in Austin, Texas, as a policy analyst and web writer. Alexander credits much of her preparation to her time on Harding\u2019s debate team, advised by Pat Garner, professor of speech.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve actually emailed Dr. Garner a few times thanking him so much,\u201d Alexander said. \u201cWhenever you get up to testify, you state your piece and you give your argument as to why a bill should or should not be passed, and then you get these questions that you need to prepare for, but you don\u2019t know exactly what you\u2019re going to get. So, a lot of my preparation for this was debating in college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garner said he worked closely with Alexander during her time at Harding and also believes that skills she developed through debate have helped her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the type of debate that we do, you have to have a breadth of knowledge about current events, social culture, &#8230; what\u2019s going on in the country on any number of levels and also international politics,\u201d Garner said. \u201cYou have to keep up with that, &#8230; but what you certainly have to do is be able to think on your feet and construct arguments and advocacy for a position very quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two bills that Alexander spoke on are HB1389, relating to a defendant that is the primary caregiver of a child, and HB650, titled, \u201cDignity for Incarcerated Women.\u201d These bills were brought before the Texas House of Representatives where Alexander testified on the subject.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Kaycie was a terrific debater,\u201d Garner said. \u201cShe did really well in our region and I\u2019m so proud of her.
