{"id":11213,"date":"2018-09-06T16:19:19","date_gmt":"2018-09-06T22:19:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/?p=11213"},"modified":"2018-09-13T23:23:29","modified_gmt":"2018-09-14T05:23:29","slug":"new-direction-new-director","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/2018\/09\/06\/new-direction-new-director\/","title":{"rendered":"New direction, new director"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Written by Danielle Turner<\/p>\n<p>This spring, Harding University in Latin America (HULA) will spend time in a new city under new leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy Daggett, a well-traveled Harding graduate, will be taking on the role of HULA&#8217;s new director.<\/p>\n<p>Daggett previously worked in the office of International Programs and Honors College, and has been faculty at both Harding University in Zambia (HIZ) and Harding University in Florence (HUF).<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Jeffrey Hopper, dean of International Programs, said Daggett has been thoroughly integrated in Harding\u2019s many international programs, is adept at languages and is fully qualified for the position academically.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen looking for a program director, I look first for a person who is in tune with Harding\u2019s mission,\u201d Hopper said. \u201cA person who will care for the student as a whole person\u2014spiritually, academically, socially, physically and recreationally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In previous years, the HULA program has spent most of their time in Vi\u00f1a del Mar, Chile. This year, the program\u2019s time will be split between Vi\u00f1a del Mar and Arequipa, Peru.<\/p>\n<p>Daggett was born and raised in Italy until his family moved to Searcy when he was 8-years-old. At age 12, he traveled to HUF as a faculty member\u2019s child and returned to the program as a student in 2007. In 2014, Daggett and his family moved to Peru to serve as missionaries to small faith communities in Arequipa.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>In partnership with the <a href=\"http:\/\/cudaperu.org\/#education\">Christian Urban Development Association<\/a>, Daggett\u2019s ministry in Arequipa focused on health and education development, as well as relationship building in the community. Daggett said he believes the HULA group will have a positive experience in Arequipa because of the existing foundation his family has there.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cOne of our goals and one of the things we think we can do well in Arequipa \u2014because of our relationship-based ministry \u2014 is get groups of two or three students into our friends\u2019 homes so they can share a meal, hang out and practice language,\u201d Daggett said.<\/p>\n<p>Along with his wife, Katie, their daughter, and a son on the way, Daggett said his family has immersed themselves in the culture and made many friends in their neighborhood by just being good neighbors. He added that they have the opportunity to share their faith with their neighbors on a daily basis.<\/p>\n<p>Daggett recently returned to Harding\u2019s campus to meet the next group of students travelling to Latin America this spring. Before returning to Searcy,\u00a0Daggett visited the previous director, Tom Hook, in Vi\u00f1a Del Mar and on trips across Latin America. Most recently, he traveled with last semester\u2019s HULA group on their trip to Easter Island.<\/p>\n<p>Junior Dillon Wilhelm met Daggett in Easter Island with the HULA group last semester.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJeremy and Katie know the world and they know Harding super well.
