The program will enable students to attend programs at one of Harding\u2019s seven international campuses at a discounted price. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jeff Hopper, dean of International Programs, said the decision to offer scholarships was made because all Harding students should have the opportunity to attend one of the programs, regardless of their financial status.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The majority of funds for the new scholarship program are allocated for supplemental scholarships to enable more students to participate in the university\u2019s seven full-semester international studies experiences.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know the cost of education is high in general and recognize the additional cost to attend an international program,\u201d Hopper said.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 40 percent of students study abroad in an international studies experience during their time at the university.The Office of International Programs said they hope this new program will enable even more students to study abroad. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope that 30 or more additional students a year will be able to study abroad because of these scholarships,\u201d Hopper said. \u201cWe believe in the importance of a global education and are excited that more students will now have the opportunity to experience Harding\u2019s international programs.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sophomore Ryann Heim is a student worker in the International Programs Office and has recently traveled abroad on Harding\u2019s Australasia (HUA) trip. Heim said studying abroad changed her life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudying abroad changes your perspective about the world and your future,\u201d Heim said. \u201cThe world is smaller and more attainable than I thought.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Heim said she is excited for students to have the opportunity to receive scholarships to travel abroad.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudying abroad is already worth much more than you pay, and so more people having access to international programs is exciting,\u201d Heim said. \u201cEveryone should have the opportunity to travel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>According to the Office of International Programs, the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>scholarships were made possible through the generosity of several key donors, including significant contributions from Kevin and Laura Uebelein, Michael and Marylyn McGuire, Nancy O\u2019Brien and Fred and Alice Jewell. The first fundraising cycle was completed in December 2017 and will continue on an ongoing basis to ensure funding for future years.<\/p>\n<p>The funds will be awarded by a financial adviser based solely on student need.<\/p>\n<p>Harding offers seven semester-long study abroad programs in Australasia, Chile, England, Greece, France, Italy and Zambia, as well as numerous other short-term study abroad opportunities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In fall 2018, the Office of International Programs will send its first round of students around the world with benefits from a new scholarship program.
