{"id":10645,"date":"2018-03-29T21:43:16","date_gmt":"2018-03-30T03:43:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/?p=10645"},"modified":"2018-03-29T21:43:16","modified_gmt":"2018-03-30T03:43:16","slug":"women-for-harding-to-host-jane-austen-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/2018\/03\/29\/women-for-harding-to-host-jane-austen-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Women for Harding to host Jane Austen event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women for Harding, a service organization that provides need-based scholarships for Harding students, will host the Jane Austen Experience Event on April 13, which will give attendees a peek into the life of renowned author Jane Austen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2017, Vice President of Parent and Alumni Relations Liz Howell hosted a birthday party for a friend. The theme was Jane Austen\u2019s \u201cPride and Prejudice,\u201d and guests were encouraged to dress in period costumes. According to Howell, the event was such a hit that she wanted to recreate the experience for the Harding community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re excited about the opportunity to bring women back to campus and engage the student body and community in the event,\u201d Howell said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event will support donations to Women for Harding scholarships which sponsor 50 to 60 students a year and focus on the empowerment of students and their communities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJane had a lot of spunk,\u201d Howell said. \u00a0\u201cShe was different from a lot of women at that time.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Howell said Austen\u2019s \u201cPride and Prejudice\u201d characters, Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet, will be represented at the event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hannah Wood, archives and special collections librarian at the Brackett Library, will portray Austen at the event and said she is excited to represent the writer for attendees. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is our hope that the literature will enrich the students\u2019 lives and assist them in their own personal development,\u201d Wood said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor of English Dr. Stephanie Eddleman, a speaker at the event, said Austen\u2019s characters explore themes of social class and gender. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe tells wonderful stories, but she\u2019s also exploring what it means to be human in certain time periods,\u201d Eddleman said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also hopes those attending her presentation will leave with a better understanding of Austen and her literature. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome people write Jane Austen off as \u2018chick lit.\u2019 I want to introduce them to a deeper level of Austen,\u201d Eddleman said. \u201cI hope that people will begin to see her as a serious thinker and writer, and not just dismiss her as fluff. Most of the issues are still applicable \u2014 perhaps with certain updates \u2014 to us today.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eddleman said that she hopes to encourage young people to read Austen\u2019s literature. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo the reader who is willing to read critically and carefully, they can absolutely learn from Austen\u2019s work,\u201d Eddleman said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jean Waldrop, Brackett Library director, said that she looks forward to seeing how the event brings women together. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen you get a bunch of women together that have a common bond, the conversations will be rich,\u201d Waldrop said. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be a fun and informative event.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waldrop also encouraged other students to attend the event to support the Women for Harding scholarship fund. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, Howell said, Jane Austen\u2019s work is timeless, and she hopes the event will provide access to her life and process. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tickets for the event start at $25, and a VIP Jane Austen package is $99. The event begins at 11:30 a.m. on April 13 in the David B. Burks American Heritage Conference Center.
