{"id":10387,"date":"2018-02-22T13:38:31","date_gmt":"2018-02-22T19:38:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/?p=10387"},"modified":"2018-02-22T13:38:31","modified_gmt":"2018-02-22T19:38:31","slug":"hu16s-live-at-5-wins-for-television-newscast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/2018\/02\/22\/hu16s-live-at-5-wins-for-television-newscast\/","title":{"rendered":"HU16\u2019s \u2018Live at 5\u2019 Wins for Television Newscast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cLive at 5,\u201d HU16\u2019s nightly news program, placed second for Best Television Newscast for the Broadcast Education Association\u2019s Festival of Media Arts Competition this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe beat a lot of state schools that have really nice studios and a lot more money,\u201d junior Grace Nickols, an HU16 news anchor said. \u201cWe\u2019ve never won anything like this before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ginger Blackstone, HU16\u2019s news director, submitted their newscast from Nov. 8, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe led the show with Eva Kor\u2019s story,\u201d Blackstone said. \u201cOnce you start your show with that, then you try not to get anything wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harding\u2019s American Studies Institute hosted Eva Kor as part of their Distinguished Lecture Series. Senior broadcast journalism major Katie Levenson reported the story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rest of the show was strong, and then the feedback we got was that they didn\u2019t really have any criticism, which was great,\u201d Blackstone said.<\/p>\n<p>The show is completely student run. However, Blackstone and Mark Prior, director of HU16 VideoWorks, assist with the show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone is very professional about it,\u201d junior Emory Rockwell, HU16\u2019s weather reporter said. \u201cI think that kind of brings it to another level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>HU16\u2019s \u201cLive at 5\u201d broadcast is never pre-recorded, meaning that mistakes cannot be edited out of the show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll I can do is open the door,\u201d Blackstone said. \u201cThey have to be the ones to walk in and put the content together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the summer of 2017, HU16\u2019s studio was remodeled and upgraded to high definition, requiring students working for the station to relearn the equipment from its entirety their previous experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe switcher is different, the cameras are different, everything is different,\u201d Blackstone said. \u201cIt\u2019s not just a few new people coming in and training. We had to start all over again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Blackstone said she believes the new equipment played a large factor in HU16\u2019s success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow we can play with the big boys,\u201d Blackstone said. \u201cWith a visual medium, you notice the visuals first. If the visuals are bad, no one is going to pay any attention to the content.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unlike larger news stations, the team only has a few hours to put everything together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t get all day to spend (like) in the real world,\u201d Blackstone said. \u201cIt takes a lot of planning and a lot of advanced work.
