{"id":10239,"date":"2018-02-01T22:31:47","date_gmt":"2018-02-02T04:31:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/?p=10239"},"modified":"2018-02-01T22:31:47","modified_gmt":"2018-02-02T04:31:47","slug":"federal-government-to-implement-real-id","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/2018\/02\/01\/federal-government-to-implement-real-id\/","title":{"rendered":"Federal Government to Implement REAL ID"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 and put in place the 9\/11 Commission\u2019s recommendation that the federal government \u201cset standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver&#8217;s licenses,\u201d according to the Department of Homeland Security\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe (REAL ID) Act requires that each state ID, which is usually the driver\u2019s license, be enhanced for security purposes,\u201d Dr. Kristi Bond, chair of the foreign language department said.<\/p>\n<p>The act is a measure taken by the government to further secure the U.S. It establishes a minimum-security standard for the license issue and limits federal agencies from accepting certain types of identification such as non-enhanced drivers licenses and other I.D. cards that don\u2019t meet the standards of the REAL ID Act.<\/p>\n<p>The act gave every state a deadline to implement the REAL ID.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach state had so long to get their driver\u2019s license up to par so to speak, and a lot of states at this point do have an enhanced driver\u2019s licenses,\u201d Bond said.<\/p>\n<p>Some states, however, are not fully compliant with the act yet. Bond said many states have an enhanced driver\u2019s license but are not yet requiring everyone to have it.<\/p>\n<p>Steven Chandler, communications and recruiting coordinator for international programs said the act will not affect international programs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re still going to have to have the real book when you go overseas,\u201d Chandler said.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s the standard worldwide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chandler said the government is implementing stricter rules for domestic flights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not going to do anything more for you,\u201d Chandler said. \u201cThey\u2019re just raising the bar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beth James, former faculty member at the Harding University in Greece (HUG) program said the enhanced license will give the carrier more credibility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I was to fly from here to California, I could show that ID and it would give me extra credibility over just a driver\u2019s license,\u201d James said.<\/p>\n<p>California began issuing REAL ID compliant driver\u2019s licenses on Jan. 22, 2018. The California Department of Motor Vehicles website states that by Oct. 1, 2020, driver\u2019s licenses should be REAL ID compliant to board airplanes, or enter military bases and federal facilities.
