{"id":10116,"date":"2018-01-25T15:30:13","date_gmt":"2018-01-25T21:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/?p=10116"},"modified":"2018-01-25T15:30:13","modified_gmt":"2018-01-25T21:30:13","slug":"nationally-recognized-educator-comes-to-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelink.harding.edu\/the-bison\/2018\/01\/25\/nationally-recognized-educator-comes-to-campus\/","title":{"rendered":"Nationally Recognized Educator Comes to Campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Educator Ron Clark will be speaking as part of the American Studies Institute (ASI) Distinguished Lecture Series on Tuesday,\u00a0 Jan. 30 in the Benson Auditorium. He is also a motivational speaker and the founder of The Ron Clark Academy. He will be speaking on \u201cCreative Practices for Motivating Members of Your Team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clark has been called \u201cAmerica\u2019s Educator\u201d and was named Oprah Winfrey\u2019s first \u201cPhenomenal Man.\u201d He travels around the country speaking about his experiences as a teacher in order to empower others and inspire them to find their calling and make it their mission.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Premiere Speakers Bureau, Clark began teaching in Harlem, New York, after watching a documentary on low test scores in inner-city schools. Within a year, the scores of his students were the top of their grade.<\/p>\n<p>In 2006, Clark teamed with Kim Bearden to create The Ron Clark Academy, a school in Atlanta, Georgia, which seeks to use transformative methods and techniques to teach students. That same year, \u201cThe Ron Clark Story\u201d was released, starring Matthew Perry from \u201cFriends\u201d as Clark. The movie told the story of his transition teaching in an inner-city school and the success that followed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe watched his movie in one of my education classes \u2026 freshman year,\u201d senior Alyssa Durant said. \u201cWe also studied his 55 essential rules with Dr. (Allen) Henderson.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clark wrote his New York Times bestseller \u201cThe Essential 55\u201d as a guideline for students, which includes a list of 55 expectations for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Senior education major and vice president of ASI Jon Ortiz said Clark\u2019s rules apply to everyone, not only those studying education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI truly believe that if we followed those rules, our society would be in much better condition than what it is,\u201d Ortiz said.<\/p>\n<p>Director of ASI Kim Kirkman said the lecture is designed to reach all majors and fields.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAttending the event will give practical things to making members of your team stronger,\u201d Kirkman said. \u201cYour\u00a0team\u00a0may be a classroom, a club, a class project group, advisory group \u2014 whatever it is, you can gain skills to strengthen\u00a0your\u00a0team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kirkman hopes that the message will inspire and motivate the audience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny major could learn something from him,\u201d Durant said. \u201cWhen you see someone who loves their profession so much and is willing to take it the extra mile \u2014 that can inspire anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As part of the event, the lecture will recognize teachers. Educators will be seated in the front of the auditorium and receive special recognition during the event, according to Ortiz.<\/p>\n<p>The lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Benson Auditorium and will conclude with a book signing to follow at 8:30 p.m.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Educator Ron Clark will be speaking as part of the American Studies Institute (ASI) Distinguished Lecture Series on Tuesday,\u00a0 Jan. 30 in the Benson Auditorium.
