This Thursday, Oct. 29, multi-award winning Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis will perform in the third concert of this year’s annual Concert Series hosted by the department of music. The performance is at 7 p.m. in the Administration Auditorium.
Fowlis’s career has spanned over 10 years, in which she has released four studio albums. According to her website, Fowlis has been nominated for Folk Singer of the Year at the 2015 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and Best Artist at the Songlines World Music Awards 2015.
Her most recognized work is featured in Disney Pixar’s “Brave,” where Fowlis sings the theme song “Touch the Sky,” as well as “Into the Open Air,” for the Oscar award-winning movie.
“There are some voices that carry much more than a melody,” The London Evening Standard said. “They transport you to another place, give you goose flesh and make magic out of thin air. Julie Fowlis has just such a voice.”‘
Dr. Cliff Ganus, chair of the department of music, said that Gaelic and Celtic music – sounds that resonate with the “Brave” soundtrack – are Fowlis’s signature style of performing. Her Scottish upbringing is greatly attributed to influencing her musical styles. Ganus said that her music combines intrigue, adventure and comfort that work together to create music that is “about as authentic as you can get.”
“This is going to be a great show because it is an opportunity to open the doors to a new culture,” Ganus said. “I think students are going to be surprised at how much they enjoy the performance, and I think this will be a performance that people will remember.”
The performance is $3 or free with a CAB pass. Prior to her performance, Fowlis will also be giving a brief presentation to music students about Gaelic and Celtic music. The fourth concert of the series will be on Nov. 19 and will feature jazz saxophonist Brad Leali
