Where do I go next?
This is a question Harding students ask a lot, especially during the spring semester. Every fall, freshmen start a new chapter in their life; four short years later, those same students, now seniors, must figure out what the next step is.
For some students this is a difficult task, and for others this decision is simple. All graduating seniors do have one thing in common: this is the end of a chapter and a start of another.
Senior Elyssa Doom, a communication science and disorders major, has been faced with that question this year. She was recently accepted in the Audiology Department in the College for Health Related Professions at the University of Arkansas Medical School, where she will enroll in the fall.
However, getting accepted into this program was not an easy task. Doom said she started feeling the pressure early in her college career and buckled down during her last two semesters at Harding.
“The past two semesters, well actually my whole college career, has not been a walk in the park,” Doom said as she reflected on her time here at Harding. “I also tend to put a lot of pressure on myself because I have always made straight A’s, so I kept that going even through this last year.”
The fact that Doom decided only to apply for UAMS was added pressure because she says, “If I didn’t get accepted (to UAMS) then I would have taken the year off and worked.”
This year wasn’t all stress for Doom though; she said she still managed to keep a positive attitude and her social life. She made sure to use her time wisely and make as many memories as she could in her final year at Harding.
With graduation a week away, Doom said she is excited and sad. However, more than anything she believes graduation will be a bittersweet ending to her undergraduate career, but an amazing start to her future.
