Ko Jo Kai and Ju Go Ju women’s social clubs hosted their second annual basket bid on the front lawn last Tuesday evening.
The basket bid was a fundraiser for the Sunshine School, a local school for the disabled. The school is currently trying to raise funds for a new building. Each basket started at $10 and went to the highest bidder. Not only did the recipient receive a basket dinner, but they were also joined by the girl who made the basket.
Kelsey Bangs, service project director for Ko Jo Kai and coordinator of the event, said the two clubs decided to host the event because they did it last year and it turned out well.
“It’s fun, cheap and right on campus so we thought that everyone would like that. And it’s a good way to raise money for the sunshine school in just a couple of hours,” Bangs said.
Although the turn out was smaller than they’d hoped, Bangs said they auctioned 11 baskets, raising more than $200 for the Sunshine School.
Freshman Ko Jo Kai member Talyor Meek participated in the charity event by putting together a basket of food fromZaxby’sand brownies fromCutie Cakes.
“It was a fun and creative way to give to the Sunshine School,” Meek said.
The event also included live music. James Taylor played guitar and sang many songs, including his own rendition of Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me.”
Sophomore Jeremie Smith said he came to the event because he knew he was sure to find some good food.
“I decided to come out for the basket bid because it was going to a good cause. Not only was it great to socialize with my friends, but there was also great food and music to enjoy while you waited,” Smith said.
Bangs said that although this was only the second year the two clubs have organized this event, they hope it will grow more popular as the years go on.
“I hope both clubs continue to do this service project because it is not only for a great cause, but also a really good way to get involved with both Ko Jo Kai and Ju Go Ju,” Bangs said.
