“Steven Ramsey believes in exercise, and that’s all there is to it.”
Ramsey, who was elected Student Association president Wednesday, coined this tongue-in-cheek statement last weekend for a campaign poster he planned to hang in the Ganus Athletic Center.
But friends of Ramsey say that his personality expands beyond his quirky wit.
“Steven is a leader no matter what the situation is,” said Tandi Morgan. “He just takes opportunities and spins them in a great light. He’s the same person no matter where he is or who he’s around.”
Ramsey’s friends have told him in years past that he would one day be theSApresident. Their predictions became reality on Wednesday, when Ramsey won the three-candidate election with 52 percent of the 1,666 votes cast.
Since he arrived at Harding, Ramsey has believed he had the ability to serve as SA president. He said he recognizes the broad range of abilities that Harding students possess and plans to promote the camaraderie that President David Burks often proclaims.
“The students here have so much talent in so many different areas,” Ramsey said. “I just want to maximize what’s already there.”
Ramsey said he thinks he can help bring the campus togetherand overcome what he calls “segmentation.”
“There are many different cultures and countries represented here,” Ramsey said. “I plan to design activities that will help us overcome walls that we may have subconsciously built and help different cultures intermingle so that the enjoyment of life can be enhanced.”
Steven Chandler, who met Ramsey at Honors Symposium in 2006, spoke highly of Ramsey and believes Ramsey will be able to connect with Harding students.
“To be a good leader you need to be able to relate to people, and I think he can effectively do that,” Chandler said.
Ramsey said he wants to involve many students to reduce the burden on everyone else. Ramsey would like to establish “project groups” when students approach him with a particular need or interest. He would then trust them to get with four to 10 other interested students and work on the issue, he said.
From there, the students could frequently update him, and he could advise them on the topic.
“I think that would give more power to more students,” Ramsey said, “and at the same time, reduce their workload.”
Ramsey, a finance major, has been actively involved in TNT social club and currently serves as its secretary. He is also a beau for Zeta Rho.
He is from Jonesboro, Ark., and graduated from Crowley’s Ridge Academy, where he served as Student Council president.
